Student support

Course and study support

How we support your learning and help you to get the most out of your course.

Tutor talking to student with notepad

Our academic staff are here to support you through your studies.

You'll have the opportunity to meet with the team before you start your course. You will also get a full introduction during your first week at York St John, as part of your course induction.

Personal academic tutor

You will have a personal academic tutor to contact for help and advice. Your tutor is there to guide you through your course and support your academic development.

You will meet your tutor when you start at York St John. You'll be invited to book 5 or 6 individual academic tutorials per year, as well as 3 group tutorials.

Your tutor will get to know you, your interests and the support you need to succeed. They'll provide you with information about how the University works, and how you can study successfully.

They are also your first point of contact if you have any problems that affect your ability to study. They'll signpost you to relevant support services at York St John.

Specialist technicians

Teams of technical specialists provide support for learning and teaching across our academic Schools. They are active practitioners and experts in their field.

Support they can provide for you includes:

  • Overseeing your independent learning in specialist spaces and labs
  • Training you to use specialist equipment, resources and software
  • Managing the booking of equipment

Study skills

The University provides you with a range of support for the development of your study, academic, digital and technical skills.

Our Library and Learning Services team and London Learning and Wellness team provide support for all students at York St John. They can help you to improve specific areas of study. This includes coursework, essay writing, using IT systems and assistive technology, and learning how to make the most of the Library.

You can book 1 to 1 tutorials with specialist staff to get help with your academic work. You can also take part in workshops or group training. Self-help guides are available to help you develop key study skills.

Your Library

The Library provides physical and online books, journals and resources to support your learning. You can also go to the Library to find a quiet place to study and work on your assignments.
